Performing ZIP repair after improper download from the Internet

Most of you would have used the file compression feature sometime or the other. It is a very useful feature that is used to squeeze your bulky files into a much smaller data packet. Usually, such data packet is saved in the ZIP extension. These files are extremely useful when you have to send these over the Internet. These ZIP files can be extracted using various file extracting applications. However, sometimes these ZIP files do get corrupt thereby disabling you from extracting the data. Such cases can arise due to virus infections, interruptions during downloading the ZIP file, CRC error, etc. In such situations, you should try to find and isolate the exact cause of the problem and try to download it again. However, if the problem persists then you should use a third-party ZIP repair software to repair ZIP file.

Consider a scenario wherein you are using Internet Explorer 8 on your Windows XP system, from which you download a ZIP file. However, when you try to extract the file it fails to do so. An error message is displayed, that is:

The Compressed (zipped) Folder is invalid or corrupted.”

Cause:
Such abnormal behavior may be exhibited when HTTP compression is enabled for the ZIP files from the Web server from which they are downloaded. Because of HTTP compression, the ZIP file is encrypted before it is sent to Internet Explorer. When the ZIP file is saved to your hard disk, Internet Explorer directly sends the file to the ZIP extracting application without decrypting the HTTP compression. That is why such error is raised.

Resolution:
To resolve this situation, you can perform the following workarounds:
You should try to disable the HTTP compression of the ZIP file on the Web server.
You should try to change the MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) type for the ZIP files on the Web server from the application/x-zip-compressed to application/octet-stream.

Now, try to download and extract the ZIP file once again, it should run fine now. However, if the issue is still not resolved then you should use a third-party ZIP recovery software to fix the problem. Such read-only tools are able to repair ZIP file without overwriting the existing data.

Rectifying “The Compressed (zipped) Folder is invalid..” Zip File Error

Data compression is the best technique to effectively store your data on any storage media in less storage space and transfer data over network. You can compress data easily using compression tools, like WinZip. The application compresses your data in Zip file. To access data from a compressed file, you need to simply extract it. However, in some cases, the Zip file cannot be extracted and opened. In such situations, you cannot access data from the file and face critical data loss situations. In order to get your data recovered in such cases, Zip recovery is required.
For instance, you may run across any of the below behaviors if you download a Zip file using Microsoft Internet Explorer web browser:

The download process appears to be completed successfully, however the compression tool, i.e. WinZip shows a blank and empty window.

If you try to search the file on hard drive, it cannot be located. The Zip file is not there on the disk.
If your computer is running MS Windows XP operating system and you use Compressed (zipped) Folders option as file compression tool, you come across the below error message:
“The Compressed (zipped) Folder is invalid or corrupted.”
When it occurs, the file cannot be extracted and you can not access its contents. To sort out this behavior, you need to identify the cause of this problem and repair Zip file by resolving it.

Root of the issue:
The problem may occur in following scenarios:
  • You click Open this file from its current location or Open in File Download dialog box.
  • You have not selected the Confirm open after download check box in Windows XP.
  • As stated in the above error message, the file is corrupt or invalid. WinZip cannot read the file.
Resolution:
Try using the below methods to fix this issue:
  • Save the file to hard drive and then open it.
  • Select Confirm open after download option before downloading the file.
  • Repair and restore the corrupt Zip file using Zip repair software.
The applications repair damaged Zip file or archive in all corruption scenarios. The efficiently repair Zip archive using advance scanning techniques. With interactive user interface and non-destructive conduct, they are totally easy and safe to use.

Resolving 'Unexpected end of archive' error while unzipping archive

Zip archives are files that contains other compressed files. One major advantage of using archives is that they make it easy to club files and make transporting and copying the files faster. You can save disk space on your computer by compressing some important files (which are not used often) and decompressing them when required. However, these Zip files are highly prone to corruption in many scenarios. Many-a-times, a Zip file gets corrupt while you lose the Internet connection in the process of downloading. This gives rise to data loss situations as you cannot extract data or other files from a corrupt archive. You can resolve the problem by downloading the file again or acquiring a backup copy. But, if you still do not succeed in retrieving the files from an archive, better go for a professional Zip repair software.

Consider a scenario, wherein, you are trying to download files from an archive, containing highlights of a crucial business deal, from Microsoft SharePoint Server, and instead receive the following error:

"Unexpected end of archive "

As a result of the error, you are not able to view the contents of the Zip file, and thus remain ignorant about significant details related to a major deal. Your immediate priority would be to repair Zip file anyhow, but you must understand the causes behind the above error message.

Cause
The above error can be encountered in the following scenarios:
  • You can receive the error message when the download starts and after downloading few megabytes, the process halts, although it shows a complete download.
  • Or if the zip file is corrupt
Resolution
In order to troubleshoot the problem and repair Zip files, you can observe the following steps:
  • Download the zip file again, you might get the whole archive
  • If after repeated attempts you are not able to recover compressed files, then use third-party zip recovery software to fix corruption issues
Such tools employ improved scanning algorithms and recover data from a zip archive efficiently, irrespective of the reason behind corruption. But, make sure you download a read-only application from the Internet lest you end up inflicting further damage to the compressed files.

Fixing 'bad CRC...' error in downloaded zip file

The Zip file format is a data archive format, using this you can compress a set of files and folders in a single file with reduced size. It is a very useful format since you can easily send or receive huge data files over the Internet. At times, you may encounter CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check) errors while extracting a zip file. The eruption of a CRC error indicates that your zip file has become corrupted and unusable. In such situations, you are not able to retrieve data and have to look up to a backup copy in order to restore the data. However, if no backup is present, you can still recover inaccessible files by using a professional zip repair utility.

As a practical case, you may come across the following error while trying to unzip some important files (from a downloaded zip file) related to your college project:

“Extracting f_0384
bad CRC eb80c9a6 (should be 372500c6)
Warning: the size of the extracted file (1974357) does not match the uncompressed size (1974076) recorded in the zip file ”

CRC is a calculation made from all the data in a file to insure accuracy in transmission. When you add a file to a Zip file, WinZip calculates a CRC value for the file and saves the value in the Zip file. When you later extract the file from the Zip file, WinZip calculates the CRC of the extracted file and compares it to the value stored when the file was zipped.

Cause
In the above scenario, the two CRC values do not match, and Win Zip displayed an error. This error indicates that data inside the zip file has got damaged. The possible cause behind data damage is a transfer error while downloading a zip file from the Internet.

Resolution
In order to address the issue, you can try the following steps:
  • Try and access another copy of the file;ask the source to send another copy
  • Download the Zip file again, you might recover some files
  • If nothing works, then you must repair the zip file using zip recovery software

A third-party recovery application is quite easy-to-use and hence, doesn't require any prior technical knowledge. Ensure you download a trusted zip recovery application which doesn't modify the original content.
